Why Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry provides benefits to patients of all ages, with various treatment options available depending on the patient’s needs. There are many reasons why people might use sedation dentistry, including:
- Dental phobia
- Previously negative dental experience
- Fear of needles
- Sensitive oral nerves
- Local anesthetic resistance
- Anxiety disorders
Not only does sedation dentistry help you relax, but it can also make your dental procedure go much smoother.
What to Expect
Sedation dentistry is used to help patients relax and minimize their anxiety while going through various dental treatments and procedures. Sedation dentistry is the use of oral medications, general anesthesia, or intravenous sedation (IV sedation).
Before TreatmentBefore you go start a dental treatment, you and your dentist will decide whether or not you want to use sedation dentistry and what type is best for you. There are two types of dental sedation, conscious sedation, and oral sedation. They both use general and local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation.
The two types of dental sedation can be administered at either a mild or a medium level:
- Mild sedation is the most common form, often given as nitrous oxide. It is used for routine dental work, implant placement, extractions, and cosmetic dentistry.
- Medium sedation is a heavier level of sedation used for more involved and intensive dental procedures. It is typically administered orally and can be used for most dental procedures.
You will still receive an anesthetic for your procedure once the sedation has started to work.
After TreatmentAfter you visit our sedation dentist in New York, you will likely feel very drowsy. Driving after using any sedation dentistry option is not advised, so you will need a familiar person to transport you home. The only exception to this is if you choose to use nitrous oxide. It does not cause drowsiness afterward, so you will typically be okay to drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
You will be sedated for the duration of your dental procedure, which depends on the type of treatment you have done. However, if you take an oral sedative, the effects may last longer than the actual treatment.
Sometimes patients remember their procedure, but these memories are often fuzzy and unclear.
